Sunday Selfie

We're doing Sunday Selfie a little different today.  Mom Paula had to rush Truffle off to the vet yesterday morning (last Saturday, it was Brulee) because of an upset stomach.  Normally, Mom Paula wouldn't rush her off that way, but since today was Sunday and Mom Paula is going to Global Pet Expo next week, she wanted to make sure Truffle was okay.  The vet thinks Truffle just ate something that didn't agree with her, but gave her some medication and told Mom Paula to watch her.  This medication is in liquid form and Truffle is doing okay with it so far.  Mom Paula had some errands to run today and she was so thankful she could check in to see how Truffle was doing due to the Petcube Play camera we recently received to review.
Watching Truffle with the Petcube Play camera.

We were scheduled to review the Petcube Play camera a few weeks ago, but with Grandpa Paul being ill, Mom Paula retiring, Brulee getting sick, and now Truffle sick, we just couldn't get it together. Mom Paula was so worried about Truffle while she was gone and tried out the Petcube camera at the restaurant and at her parents and was relieved to see Truffle resting on the ottomon in a lovely sunbeam.  She said being able to monitor Truffle made her day because she could check on Truffle and talk to her. We'll share our review of the Petcube Play camera this week, so please stay tuned.

Caturday Art

Back to LunaPic today for our Caturday Art creation.  This photo of Brulee was blurry in the original photo, so we thought we'd see what we could do with LunaPic to make it a photo we could use.  We used the "scribble" art effect and liked the results.  We then added some green eye color from PicMonkey.  Now, we  have a lovely art creation of  Brulee taking her Saturday morning bath.

Thankful Thursday

None of Mom Paula's 4 cats have been lap cats.  Truffle likes to sleep near Mom Paula and will tolerate being held for a short time, but has never climbed onto her lap to nap.  Brulee likes to be near Mom Paula and will climb into her lap only when Mom Paula is in bed and only on Brulee's terms. Recently, Truffle has climbed onto Mom Paula's lap while she is watching TV and will settle in making biscuits (which she hasn't done), and take a long nap. Mom Paula was so thrilled that she didn't move for over an hour because she didn't want Truffle to leave.  This is occurring a little more frequently, but only on Truffle's terms.  Mom Paula is very thankful she is getting a lap kitty.  Mom Paula especially loves it when she wakes up from a nap in the chair and realizes that Truffle joined her on the lap for the nap.

Truffle Tuesday

Truffle says the focus has been on Brulee too many days in a row this week.  She loves her sister, but Truffle demands equal time when it comes to the blog and Mom Paula.
Truffle surveying her domain from the top of the cat tree

Mom Paula:  Truffle has been sulking a little this past weekend.  I'm sure it has to do with the strange smells on Brulee and that allergy pill didn't help.  Truffle has preferred staying in the bedroom away from Brulee and me.  I prefer to believe she knows Brulee wasn't feeling well and that she needed my attention to help her get better.  I always make sure to give Truffle equal time and attention when it comes to cuddling and treats.

Brulee is doing much better today.  I didn't give her an allergy pill because she didn't sneeze one time yesterday.

No More Pills

Brulee is feeling much better today.  This weekend has been a battle between Brulee and Mom Paula concerning the taking of her pill for allergies.  The vet recommended taking a Chlorpheniramine (“Chlor Trimeton”). (1/2 pill twice daily) while Brulee is sneezing.  This is much easier said than done!
Brulee says, "no more pills"

It's been a long time since Mom Paula had to give Brulee a pill.  In the past, it wasn't too difficult.  When Brulee was sick back in September, she took some liquid medication. She did okay with it (Truffle did not).  Mom Paula thought this would be easy, but didn't think about the "human" pill being bitter.  Here are the attempts at pilling Brulee.

  1. Open mouth and insert pill.  Mom Paula thought this worked, but as soon as Brulee got away, she spit out the pill on the bed.  Score:  Brulee = 1, Mom Paula = 0
  2. Put the pill in a pill pocket.  Mom Paula broke the pill pocket into small pieces and fed them to Brulee as treats and the last piece was wrapped around the pill.  Brulee ate all of the pill pocket and spit out the pill.  Score:  Brulee = 2, Mom Paula = 0
  3. Crush the pill and put it into the juice of chicken broth in Brulee favorite cat food. Brulee began licking the broth, but after the second lick, she stopped and looked at the bowl.  She tried to lick one more time, but stopped and walked away.  Score:  Brulee = 3, Mom Paula = 0
  4. Crush the pill and put inside a favorite treat.  Brulee smelled the treat and turned her head.  Score:  Brulee = 4, Mom Paula = 0
  5. Crush the pill, mix with tuna juice, and put into a syringe.  Open Brulee's mouth and insert juice.  Most of the liquid got down Brulee's throat with a little bit of foaming at the mouth.  Mom Paula then squirted some water into Brulee's mouth.  Mom Paula followed through with some freeze-dried chicken treats.  Score - Brulee 4.5, Mom Paula = 0.5
Mom Paula doesn't want to stress Brulee if she really isn't that sick, but she doesn't like hearing Brulee sneeze.  Mom Paula bought some pill masker paste and a pill popper for the future if Brulee needs more medication.  Some of our cat blogger friends also suggested buying some capsules to put the crushed pill into.  After thinking about it, Mom Paula remembers some of her allergy medication having a bitter taste.

And so, the saga of giving Brulee allergy medication continues...

Caturday Art

We almost didn't think we'd be able to post today because Mom Paula rushed Brulee off to the vet this morning.  Brulee was sneezing, breathing hard (no open mouth), and lethargic.  We were afraid she had that terrible URI she's had already this year.  There was no fever and the vet said Brulee's chest sounded fine. She believes it is an allergy and we are giving her 1/2 pill of Chlor-Trimeton, twice a day to see if it will help.  Brulee doesn't like being pilled, so Mom Paula will probably need to go get some pill pockets to see if Brulee will take the pill that way.

Please keep your paws crossed and those purrs coming that this is just an allergy for our sweet girls.

Traveling Together to the Vet

When one of us goes to the vet, the other also goes along for the ride.  Why would Mom Paula do this?
Truffle and Brulee in their Sleepypods

Two years ago Brulee was so sick that she had to be rushed to the emergency vet two times.  Both times she stayed in the back of the hospital for several hours with all of those smells.  When she came home, Truffle was stressed because she didn't recognize the smell of Brulee.  This was the first time it had happened when one or the other went to the vet alone.  It took Truffle almost a week to recognize and "accept" Brulee again.  That summer, Truffle had to be taken to the vet quickly because of an infection in her eye.  Brulee stayed home.  When Mom Paula brought Truffle back, Brulee then had a hissy fit and it took several days for the two to accept each other again.  After three times of this happening, Mom Paula decided that both of us would always travel to the vet together.
Truffle and Brulee in the car

We travel in safety and style in our Sleepypod® Mobile Pet Bed.  We've talked about the Sleepypod® in previous post and shared it's safety in crash tests.  The photo above is the incorrect way to carry the girls in the car.  Mom Paula put us this way until she could clean out the back seat for one of the carriers.  Each Sleepypod is attached by the seatbelt through two loops.  Mom Paula usually puts Truffle in the front seat because she sings to her all the way to the vet.  Brulee just curls up and sleeps on the way to the vet.
Waiting to see the vet

Once we arrive at the vet, Mom Paula opens the lid of the Sleepypod and lets us roam around or stay inside, whichever we prefer.  Usually, we stay inside the Sleepypod or on the examination table until the vet comes in, but this time, we wanted to roam around.  Brulee was taken to the back room to have blood drawn (the vets explain that cats tend to be more calm with this procedure when their human isn't around), so Truffle and Mom Paula waited.  Truffle didn't want to stay in the examination table this time and preferred to roam.  Mom Paula did hold her on the table for a few minutes because she found a black bump on Truffle's shoulder this weekend, which freaked her out.  All she could think of was the Big C because Truffle's littermate, Beignet, died from a sarcoma.  Mom Paula checked the bump every day and it appeared to be decreasing, so she felt a little better.
Truffle's bump

When Mom Paula rubbed her finger over the bump, the black part came off, so she assumed it was a scab from a tussle between Truffle and Brulee.  She wet the fur over the bump so she could show it to Dr. Hansche when he came in because it's difficult to find once the fur is in place.  Dr. Hansche inspected the bump and said it appeared to be a "war wound" from Brulee.  He asked me, "what was your first thought when you saw it?"  I replied, "cancer."  He assured me it was nothing, but said it was a good thing I had him to check it out.
Brulee being examined

Dr. Hansche then examined Brulee.  He said she did well with drawing the blood.  Brulee now weighs 8.6 pounds, which is a little surprising because silver shaded Persians are usually between 5-7 pounds.  Brulee isn't fat; she just has that cobby Persian body.  Her teeth looked great, all vitals were normal, and the bloodwork came back normal.  Dr. Hansche always says how much he loves the girls and even offered to trade his 4 dogs for Truffle and Brulee.  Mom Paula laughed at him.
Dr. Hansche with Truffle and Brulee

Mom Paula loves how Dr. Hansche will pick up both girls and snuggle with them.  Our veterinary hospital, Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital, recently received the AAFP designation of  Cat Friendly Practice Gold.  Mom Paula is scheduled to interview one of the vets on March 30 about this designation and we'll share the interview with you.  We love that our vet is both AAHA accredited and an AAFP Cat Friendly Practice.  We don't really like going to the vet, but we're happy that when we do, we have wonderful people taking care of us.
Brulee exploring the examination room
We already have pet insurance through Trupanion, which covers illness, accidents, and medication.  It doesn't cover the vet fee or our Revolution treatment.  Cherokee Trail now offers a wellness program which covers two office visits a year with the vet's fee, a year of Revolution, bloodwork, and other things.  Mom Paula chose to enroll Brulee in this program and will enroll Truffle when she goes back for her annual checkup.  All in all, everything went well at the vet.

Truffle was a little hissy for a couple of days because Brulee smelled different from getting her blood drawn (alcohol?).

Thankful Thursday

As you probably figured out from yesterday's post, Brulee went to the vet yesterday.  Truffle had to tag along with her because Mom Paula is trying to keep our smells the same.  Truffle was still hissy when they got back home.  Nothing was wrong with Brulee; it was her annual checkup.  The vet did draw some blood for some baseline data since Brulee turned 5 years old this year.  We should hear the results of the test sometime today.  We'll share more about the vet visit after we receive the results.
Brulee was a little out of it because of the Benedryl she's pretreated with prior to vaccinations

We're very thankful Brulee appears to be okay.

Time Spent with Cats

Mom Paula always says she can feel her blood pressure dropping when she walks in the door and sees us.  She says she is even more relaxes when one of us turns and gives her that look that makes her melt.  Last night, during a photo shoot, Truffle laid on her side and turned her head upside down to look at Mom Paula.  At that point in time, Truffle could get anything she wanted.  Do you get special looks from your fur child?

Back in the Cat Cave

A few months ago, we shared a review on the Walking Palm Cat Cave.  At the time, both Truffle and Brulee loved it.  They would sleep inside and on top of it.  Like all cats, they change their preferences where they like to sleep as much as humans change underwear.  MOL!  They hadn't slept inside the cat cave in a couple of months, but last night, both Truffle and Brulee decided they wanted to crawl inside the cat cave for a little nap.

Truffle was resting on one of the chairs in the living room when she saw Brulee crawl inside the cat cave.  It wasn't a few seconds before Truffle wanted inside, too.  They could probably both fit because they are such small cats, but Mom Paula didn't want a tussle to follow because each wanted it for herself, so Mom Paula picked up Truffle so Brulee could rest undisturbed.

A satisfied  Brulee

Don't you just love the smug look on Brulee's face now that she has the cat cave to herself?  Mom Paula keeps saying she needs to get a second cave so both girls can have one.

Have a great week!
